Preparing for Your Devon Newborn Photography Session: Tips for Capturing Timeless Memories | Exeter & Plymouth Photographer

Congratulations, I assume if you are here then you're expecting a baby!

This is an exciting time in your life, and one that is bittersweet, I speak from experience when I say i found it heartbreakingly incredible- the moments are wonderful but most of them will be forgotten. As a lifestyle newborn photographer as well as a mother, I know how important it is to capture these early moments with your little one. To help ensure that your newborn photography session goes smoothly and is a success, here are some tips to help you prepare.

  1. Schedule Your Session Early

It's best to schedule your newborn photography session early on, ideally during your pregnancy. This will give you plenty of time to plan and prepare, and will ensure that your photographer (me!) has availability during the critical newborn window (within the first 2-3 weeks after birth).

  1. Choose a Location

Lifestyle newborn photography sessions are typically held in your home, where you and your baby are most comfortable. Think about which rooms in your home have the best natural light and are most aesthetically pleasing, and talk to your photographer about which spaces will work best.

  1. Plan Your Outfits

Think about what you and your family will wear for the photo shoot. Choose outfits that are comfortable and reflect your personal style. Avoid busy patterns or logos, as these can be distracting in photos. Neutral colors work well and will help keep the focus on your newborn.

  1. Keep Your Baby Comfortable

Make sure your baby is well-fed and rested before the session. A full and sleepy baby will be more relaxed and easier to photograph. Keep the room warm, so your baby is comfortable in their diaper or a simple outfit.

  1. Prepare Your Home

I adore mess- it makes your photos unique and real HOWEVER from the other side of the lens I know how I am before a shoot so if you want to, think about taking some time to declutter and tidy up the spaces where you'll be taking photos. Your photographer may need to move furniture around or use different areas of the room for different shots. Make sure there is plenty of space and that your home is clean and tidy.

  1. Have Props on Hand

Think about any props or accessories you'd like to incorporate into the photos, such as a special blanket or toy. Your photographer may also have props/outfits they can bring along. Be sure to discuss this ahead of time so that everything is planned out.

Preparing for your lifestyle newborn photography session doesn't have to be stressful. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your session is a success and that you have beautiful, timeless photos of your family to cherish forever.
