All over my IG, FB and website I have the words ‘Authentic’, ‘Organic’, ‘Natural’ and ‘Minimalistic’ when describing my work.
What do I actually mean with these words though? They are the kind of flouncy add-on marketing words used but not understood.
What I am trying to create through my work is beautiful baby photography that will not look dated. I was staying in a holiday cottage this weekend and the owner had up on the walls two late 90s/early 00s photos of her sons. Do you know how I know when they are from? And not only that but what I can deduce from looking at them...
1) The studio lighting. It was bad. I know that she will not have paid much for these photos. The photographer was either experienced but totally out of touch with what they should be doing or they were fairly new at the time and had no idea what they should be doing.
2) . The white paper backdrop. Very Venture 2001. 3) . The mismatched, brightly coloured shirts that the toddlers were wearing. They had been dressed nicely by their parents however it was bright, clashing and totally taking everything away from the subjects. My eyes hurt just thinking about it. (if you are unsure about how to style your children for a shoot then please do contact your photographer and ask them for ideas).
So let me explain my style... It is work that is a bit different from the standard newborn photos. Natural photography where your baby just chills out (as baby does) and I capture this exactly how they are. I will pose them a little- it is baby-led so I follow cues from your baby and I pose them as they allow me.
Nothing unnatural. Even the lighting is natural- from two skylights and one very large patio door, diffused using layers of fabric. The toys I use are wooden mostly, the snuggles with mama are totally unposed so I can capture those true AUTHENTIC moments.
Mostly through this, I want photos of your baby that truly represent and show them how they were when they were this tiny, without the added fluff, headbands, props and outfits. I do hope I’m achieving this.
